Auctions is pleased to offer a fine vintage enameled copper Chinese Qing dynasty lidded Ginger Jar depicting 18 Lohan. This very beautiful jar is exquisitely decorated with portraits of.

The 18 Lohan, together with the highly auspicious longevity symbols of Japanese Crane, and a peach, depicted on the lid. It is embellished with a gorgeous brick red decorative trim patterning around the neck and base, and a sumptuous polychromatic blue on the inside and underside of the lid. Its apogee in the late 18th century during the Qianlong reign, when enameled coloring techniques for both porcelain and metal were developed to an unprecedented level of perfection. The 18 Lohan were first depicted in a painting by the Buddhist monk Guan Xiu in 891 A.

Although they can be depicted in many ways, there are generally two types of depictions. One represents ascetics and men with exaggerated features, sometimes grotesquely distorted with emaciated bodies to indicate their asceticism and otherworldliness. The other is more naturalistic and depicts individuals with serene expressions, in simple monks robes, varying in age as well as features, gestures and poses. They are represented on the ginger jar with. Distorted, exaggerated expressions including large heads, hanging cheeks and high noses, which is in keeping with Guan Xius definitive depiction.

This superb piece measures 6.8 inches in diameter by 7.75 inches in height (17.2 cm by 19.6 cm). The jar base bears an apocryphal four-character mark. From the late 19th century revival and shows wear consistent with the period, including shelf wear and very minor scuffs to the rim and base; but overall it is in excellent condition. A fabulous collectors piece, it is guaranteed authentic.
