The background is a beautiful yellow with colorful paintings of peaches, persimmons, flowers, butterflies and a cricket. As with many older Chinese porcelain antiques, the painting is deep and heavy on the porcelain. The flowers, fruit and insects are very traditional Chinese motifs and look so beautiful against the yellow background.
The Famille Jaune ginger jar was made in the Qing Dynasty (1680 - 1911). The original lid for the jar was apparently lost along the way but was replaced long ago by a beautiful hand carved antique pierced wooden cover. These antique hand carved pierced wood lids are highly prized by collectors today and can sell for more than antique porcelain pieces. The open work on the top of the lid is the Chinese symbol of health and longevity. There is a lovely old patina on the lid and it fits nicely on the ginger jar. It has remained one of my favorites. The ginger jar is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.
There are common features that occured in the making of this old porcelain piece including glaze pops, tiny holes and missed glaze. None of these are noticeable without close inspection and do not detract from the beauty of the ginger jar. The rim of the base is a little rough from use but no cracks or chips are present.
There are some little scratches, marks & rubs on the surface of the porcelain. The Famille Jaune jar is unmarked but dates to the 19th century Qing Dynasty in China. The pierced wood lid is not marked but is 19th century or very early 20th century Qing. It is in remarkable condition since old wood can shrink, crack and warp. There are two chips along the rim of the lid.One is very small and the other can be seen in the photos. There is a little paint loss. There are no cracks, shrinkage and warping in the lid. The lid is quite substantial and beautifully carved. The stand has five carved feet as well as other carved decoration. The color of the wood and the old patina matches the wood lid very well. The stand is a little larger than the base of the jar and displays the jar beautifully. There are a few little chips and paint loss on the stand. There is a hole in the center of the stand. Chinese Famille Jaune Ginger Jar. Circumference at widest point: 27. Diameter of base: 6 1/8. Chinese Famille Jaune porcelain is more difficult to find than other designs.
